GM roadshow to begin after elections: sources

Vehicles for sale are parked at a Cadillac dealer in Sherman Oaks, Calif. GM plans to begin courting investors for its IPO immediately after the Nov. 2 U.S. midterm congressional elections.

Automaker General Motors Co plans to begin courting investors for its initial public offering immediately after the November 2 U.S. midterm congressional elections, two sources familiar with the plans said on Wednesday.

GM's roadshow is set to begin on November 3 and will last two weeks, the sources said. The IPO is expected to price on November 17 and debut on November 18, the sources said.
The sources cautioned that the plans were still being finalized and could change based on how U.S. stock markets perform.

Waiting until after the November 2 elections would also allow bankers to tout GM's third-quarter financial results to investors although the automaker has cautioned that the second half of the year will show a slowdown from the first half.

In August, GM filed paperwork for an IPO that could be worth as much as $20 billion, making it potentially one of the biggest IPOs of all time and the biggest new issue in the United States since Visa Inc's March 2008 IPO of $19.7 billion.

The final value of the IPO has not been set but one source said early plans for the IPO envisioned selling $12 billion to $16 billion in common stock and $3 billion to $4 billion in preferred stock that would convert to common stock under a mandatory provision.

GM filed paperwork for its IPO just over a year after emerging from a government-sponsored restructuring in bankruptcy. The U.S. government poured $50 billion of taxpayer money into the carmaker and emerged with a 61 percent stake.

Fire out, no sheen visible at Gulf oil platform

A fire on a well connected to an oil and gas production platform in the Gulf of Mexico is out and there is no indication of an oil sheen, the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday.

There were no serious injuries among the platform's rescued 13 crew members, who were wearing survival suits when they were plucked out of the water. They were being evaluated at Terrebone General Hospital, officials said.

Despite earlier reports, there is no evidence of an oil sheen, said U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Peter Troedsson, adding there were no visible leaks.

"We continue to investigate and to monitor that situation," he said at a news conference.

The vessel, the Vermilion Block 380, was engulfed in flames Thursday morning about 100 miles off the central coast of Louisiana. The fire forced its crew into the water. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said the crew was doing maintenance when fire broke out.

Jindal said the men he spoke to were in good spirits and one was being released to go home for his son's birthday. "What's important is there are no injuries, no loss of life," Jindal said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, officials said.

Mariner Energy, which owns the platform, said that the fire was not sparked by an explosion. It started at one of the platform's seven active wells after a safety shutoff occurred, the company said.

"Automated shutoff equipment on the platform safely turned off the flow of oil and gas from the platform's seven producing wells before the fire occurred and the crew evacuated," Mariner Energy said in a statement.

Such safety equipment did not kick in on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, which burned and sank in April, causing a major oil spill. The blowout preventer malfunctioned.

During the last week of August, production from the platform averaged approximately 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas a day and 1,400 barrels (58,800 gallons) of oil, the company said.

Chilean miners receive first hot meal in three weeks

Chilean miners trapped underground after a rock collapse have received their first hot meal in 26 days.

Meatballs, chicken and rice were piped through a tube to the 33 miners, who are stuck 700m (2,300ft) below the surface.

Previously the miners have been only been nourished with glucose tablets and high-protein milk.

A team from the US space agency Nasa have arrived at the mine to offer their advice on keeping the miners healthy.

The team of four experts were requested by the Chilean government to share their experience of coping in confined spaces.

A nutritionist from the team helped put together the menu.
'No alcohol'

Engineers have drilled through 20m of rock so far at the San Jose mine, in Copiapo, after beginning their work on Monday. The rescue attempt is expected to take three to four months.

The Nasa team, who will be there until Friday, praised the work of rescue workers to keep miners healthy.

"We've been very impressed with the organisation of the team and the quality of the medical care that's been provided," Nasa's team leader, Michael Duncan, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

"And we've been very impressed also with the courage and the organisation that the miners have provided themselves in this very difficult circumstance," he added.

He recommended that the miners did not consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes.

Dr Duncan has said that the focus should be on the miners' calorie intake, sleep schedule and their levels of optimism.

Nutritionist Amelia Ponce said she would try to evaluate the miners' weights and estimate how many kilos they had lost.

"We don't have any way of weighing them, so what we can do is have them give an average weight that they estimate," she said.

'Night and day'

Chilean officials have said that they are working out a programme to simulate night and day in the mine to ensure the mental well-being of the men.

"The most important thing we're doing right now from the psychological point of view is to simulate conditions of day, night, and separating the space where they're living into zones," Health Minister Jaime Manalich told press.

A video released on Wednesday showed the miners to be in better spirits than earlier images, wearing clean red T-shirts. Some of them had shaved off the beards they had grown.

Officials have said that rescue attempts will also involve a "Plan B", in which a team will drill a separate shaft from a different part of the mountainside.

Dr Duncan has told Chilean officials to be frank with the miners about how long their rescue will take.

The miners have been told it could take a long time to get them out of the mine, but have not been given dates.
